Kapunda

Kapunda became a very prosperous town and the income from the Kapunda mine and subsequently from the copper mines in Burra, gave a much-needed boost to the South Australian economy in the 1800s.

Kapunda was the first commercial mining centre in Australia. Francis Dutton (the brother of Frederick, the original owner of Anlaby) together with the son of Captain Bagot, discovered copper in 1863.

Kapunda has an excellent museum run by hard working volunteers. Well worth a visit. Open each afternoon 1.00 to 4.00 pm.

There are many fine buildings in Kapunda and there is a walking tour that can be taken to see the best of these. Details are available from the Kapunda visitor Centre in Main Street.

Clare valley

To get to the Clare Valley directly from Anlaby, turn left out of the main gate and travel approximately 8 km along Anlaby Road until you come to a T intersection with the Marrabel/Eudunda Road. Turn left and follow the signs to Marrabel, Saddleworth and Auburn. This is the beginning of the Clare Valley wine region.

Alternatively, to avoid the unsealed section of road heading north, turn right out the driveway and follow the sealed road back into Kapunda and follow the signs to Clare.

Established by the Jesuits in 1851 to provide alter wine, the vineyard now produces premium table wines. In addition to the cellar door, visitors can visit the historic site taking advantage of self-guided walking tours.
