HISTORY

The Anlaby Heritage flock is the oldest continuously operating merino stud in South Australia.

The current flock is directly descended from sheep walked overland from New South Wales in 1839 by Frederick Dutton, in an extraordinary journey that took around six months.

That flock helped shape far more than the land itself. The prosperity it created funded the growth of Anlaby into one of South Australia’s great pastoral estates, with the homestead, gardens and buildings developing across the Victorian and Edwardian eras.

Today, that history still lives on at Anlaby. It can be seen in the landscape, felt across the estate, and experienced by those who visit, tour and stay here, just outside the Barossa Valley.

The extensive homestead built in 1861 sits in 10 acres of Edwardian gardens within the working buildings of the property including stables, workers cottages and sheds that give the feel of a little English village.

PURE LUXURY MERINO

Anlaby’s signature is Pure Luxury Merino

Anlaby offers an exclusive range of Pure Luxury Merino throws, scarves, wraps, ponchos and baby blankets. Each limited-edition product embodies a unique piece of Australian history, and is beautifully packaged with its certificate of authenticity, verifying it as 100% Anlaby wool and tracing its historic roots all the way back to the original flock.

The Grounds

Immerse yourself in tranquility

Set just outside the Barossa Valley, Anlaby is an extraordinary estate where formal gardens, heritage buildings and the wider rural landscape come together in a way that feels both grand and deeply peaceful.

Across 10 acres of gardens, terrace upon terrace unfolds through the stables, Clydesdale pavilion, shade houses, cucumber house, mushroom house and camellia house. Ongoing restoration continues to honour the estate’s history, including the Edwardian timber-slatted shade house overlooking the walled vegetable garden.

To spend time here is to experience a different rhythm. Slower, quieter and shaped by generations of care.

The Grounds

Immerse yourself in tranquility

Anlaby is effectively an English country estate set in an Australian rural landscape featuring 10 acres of formal gardens and an English village like collection of heritage buildings.

With terrace upon terrace there are stables, a Clydesdale pavilion, shade houses, cucumber house, mushroom house and camelia house. In 2022 the restoration programme includes the timber slatted Edwardian shade house over the walled vegetable garden.

The House

Built by Frederick Dutton in 1860 and continuously refined over the next 60 years, the heritage-listed homestead became one of South Australia’s iconic homes.

Over the decades, Anlaby welcomed some of the most notable figures of its time, including State Governors, Earl Spencer during his time as ADC to the Governor, Patrick White and many others.

With 32 rooms, the house retains much of the architectural beauty and decorative detail of its heyday. Rare William Morris textiles, silk and silver embroidered curtains, and two remarkable libraries speak to the scale, character and craftsmanship of the home.
